Over the past few decades we’ve seen significant progress in the treatment of mental health issues. While we may have almost completely moved away from straight jackets and asylums, there’s still more that can be done to improve the quality of our mental health treatment. 
 
Our aim is to continue to help remove the stigma and normalise the discussions around mental health, and provide early intervention, spotting the symptoms and sign posting someone to get professional help. 
 
The increase in awareness around mental health, has put a strain on the NHS with waiting times being 6 to 18 months to receive CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy).

It’s a much more competitive market 
We need to be leaner in how we deliver our products and services 
We are competing with the world wide web 
Lack of leadership 
Poor communication  
Which puts more pressure on directors, managers and employees

What does this all mean?  

Huge expectation on managers to deliver against their key performance indicators 
 
 
Often with limited time and resources 
Now, our experience tells us, very few managers have the necessary skills to handle a mental health issue at work 

So, what is the negative effect/impact on your business?  

 
Stress on management – not having the necessary skills to handle or deal with someone with a mental health issue/crisis 
A potential reduction in performance and efficiency 
A potential increase in absenteeism 
A potential increase in presenteeism 
A drop in motivation, engagement and morale 
 
All the above could lead to the employee being off work for a long time or not returning at all. 

Which could mean the following:  

 
Re-allocating tasks and managing the work force, applying more pressure on them 
Recruiting temporary or permanent staff 
Training existing and new staff 
The cost for the above is extremely high!! 

How do you stop all this happening?  

 
You train your managers to become more aware of the symptoms. 
If employees know their boss is clued up in mental health matters, they may feel more comfortable in coming forward to discuss any problems they may have at work, or even at home. 
As a manager we want to keep them productive and efficient, so providing the help early on, will help to minimise the risk of the employee being off work for a long time.
